National Hispanic Heritage Month

This month, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across our nation and around the world. From groundbreaking scientists and artists to everyday heroes in our own neighborhood, Hispanic and Latino heritage is woven into the fabric of who we are as a country. We encourage you to explore music, food, literature, and stories from these vibrant cultures alongside your children at home. This observance offers an opportunity to learn about trailblazers who have shaped our world, and we hope these conversations continue around your dinner table!

RFID Bus Cards: A Quick Reminder

Dear Woodward Families,
As we begin another school year, we wanted to provide a quick reminder about the RFID keycards used on our school buses. We will be rolling out our card system to Woodward and Neary students on Tuesday, September 15th.

Students assigned to a Woodward bus for either their morning or afternoon route will have a personalized RFID card attached to their backpack. Students should swipe their card when boarding and exiting the bus. The system helps our transportation team and school staff monitor ridership and confirm when students board and leave the bus.

A Few Important Reminders
  • Please keep your child's RFID card attached to their backpack so it is available each day they ride the bus.
  • If a card is lost, forgotten, or not working, your child can still ride the bus. Please have them let the driver or the Woodward office know so we can assist.
  • RFID cards are provided at no cost to families.
  • The system records information only when a student swipes their card to board or exit the bus. It does not track students outside of the bus.
  • Ridership information is accessible only to authorized school and transportation personnel.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us keep our students safe and our transportation system running smoothly. We appreciate your support in reminding your child to bring their RFID card whenever they ride the bus.
If you have questions about the RFID system or your child's bus card, please contact the Woodward office or our Transportation Coordinator, Sheila Hana, at shana@nsboro.k12.ma.us or 508-485-5115.

Respectfully,
Steven Mucci, Principal

Literacy Universal Screener

Dear Families,
I am writing to share information about one of the ways your child in grades K-5 will be assessed in reading this year. Our teachers have many ways to check your child’s reading development and growth, including an early literacy universal screening assessment. Early literacy universal screening assessments are brief tests that provide information about your child’s early reading skills. Screening makes it possible to see if a student is at risk of developing reading difficulties, including the risk of dyslexia. Screening does not diagnose dyslexia or other disabilities, but it does help us understand which students may need additional support to be successful readers. We are required to assess students in grades K-3 at least twice per year, consistent with Massachusetts regulation 603 CMR 28.03(1)(f).

Our district uses screening assessments called Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, 8th Edition (DIBELS) and Acadience RAN. These are two of several screening assessments approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Your child will be assessed three times during the school year. It typically takes five to ten minutes to complete both assessments. The tentative schedule for this school year is shown below.

Woodward Students (2nd, 3rd)
Fall: Weeks of September 8th and September 14th, 2026
Winter: Week of January 11th, 2027
Spring: Week of May 24th, 2027

Following the screening assessment, a team at our school will review all students’ results. If your child scores “significantly below benchmark,” we will contact you within 30 school days of testing to discuss how we can support your child.
Please reach out if you would like additional information.
  • For questions about the early literacy universal screening, contact Steven Mucci.
  • For questions about your child’s testing results, contact Katie Nordman, Literacy Specialist.
Screening is another step that helps students at our school become proficient readers, and we are grateful for your continued support and partnership.

SOS Family Picnic

Today, Friday, September 11th, Woodward SOS will host our annual Welcome Back Picnic, and it's always a wonderful way to kick off the school year! Families will have the chance to reconnect, and students will enjoy catching up with friends, playing on the playground, and getting their faces painted. Keep an eye out for the pizza and ice cream trucks, a favorite with kids and adults alike. Thank you in advance to the SOS for organizing this fun community event. We can't wait to see everyone there!
