Woodward School String Program Information
Dear FUTURE THIRD GRADE FAMILIES,
Exciting musical opportunities are headed your way next year! Woodward third grade students are offered the chance to learn a string instrument. Our Southborough Music Program is excellent, and a high percentage of our students participate in orchestra, band, and/or chorus. Chorus and band begin formally in 4th grade, but our string program begins in 3rd grade. Many of you may already know about our string program through older children or friends, but here are some questions you may have:
What instruments are included at this level?
Students may learn violin, viola or cello. (In 4th grade, we also offer string bass.) Students will be part of a larger group of players and will be pulled out of class once a week for their group lesson. The number of students who register will determine the size of our groups.
Each 3rd grader will also learn to play the recorder next year as part of the general music curriculum, but that’s something totally different. Details on that will be coming in the fall.
Who, Where and When?
Any 3rd grade student may enroll in strings. This is completely optional. String classes will take place once a week during the school day in the music room. Students will be responsible to make up all class work that is missed during their lesson, as arranged with the classroom teacher. Once all registration forms have been turned in, we will be able to set up next year’s schedule, which we will send home in the fall. Students are expected to show proper respect toward the instruments and class members. Self-control is very important when dealing with delicate, expensive instruments. Our class lessons will begin early September
How do I get an instrument?
I strongly suggest renting-to-own. If you buy, you will need to continually purchase the next size up, as your child grows. If you borrow from a friend or relative, please be sure to have the correct size. I also suggest having the borrowed instrument checked for any repairs needed. A beginning student needs to feel great about his or her sound, and an instrument that’s not in top condition quickly leads to discouragement.
PLEASE DON’T BUY INSTRUMENTS FROM THE INTERNET OR DEPARTMENT STORES.
The prices can be low, but the instruments are often very poor quality and unplayable! They are basically just toys. Many of these can’t even be tuned, or stay in tune, for more than two minutes, no matter how hard I try. This is the quickest way for students to become discouraged. Unfortunately, I have seen this first-hand. (Even if the box says that the brand is recommended by music teachers, don’t believe it!)
Renting-To-Own
In the past, we have typically had an Instrument Rental Night which took place on a September evening at the Neary School. There were representatives from various music companies present, to allow you to purchase or rent an instrument. I can highly recommend the instruments provided by French Music (Westborough), Johnson Strings (Newton), and Music and Arts (Westborough).
Over the past two years, we have utilized online rentals, which went very well. I will post the links and update the information as it becomes available. In the meantime, feel free to compare and ask questions. You may also go to the music stores to rent or purchase ahead of time. I will let you know the correct size of the instrument for your child, prior to Rental Night, or you can ask the music store person to measure your child, if you decide to go at a different time.
Are other materials required?
In addition to the instrument, each student will also need supplemental items, most of which will be available at Rental Night. The list will be available when you register. (method book, music stand, etc.)
What about practicing?
I tell students that, just like brushing one’s teeth every day or feeding the dog every day, it is vital that they practice their songs at home every day, in order to develop the skills and muscles needed. Since “every single day” is unrealistic, we aim for 5 days, whenever possible. Students are assigned a few songs/activities to practice every day for 5 days. Some students may need help in finding a time of day that is free from distractions. This habit is a wonderful life skill and discipline. Daily practice is just as important as going to the lessons! Music is just like the real world. The most successful people are usually the ones who work the hardest – a lesson which will definitely help them in their other academic areas, as well as life.
Will my child be graded in String Class?
Yes, students’ assessment on their report cards will include: Coming to class prepared with all required materials, Performing with technical accuracy, Demonstrating proper playing position, posture and bow hold, Fulfilling his/her weekly practice commitment, and Showing responsible behavior and effort.
How do we sign up?
Fill out the registration form and send it to school on or before Friday, May 17th, 2024.
Decide from which company you will rent, if needed. Lessons will begin in early September!
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Email is the best way to reach me.
I look forward to working with our upcoming Woodward string students!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Joanne Geeze, Woodward Music Specialist
In addition to the instrument, each student is required to have the following supplies:
*1. Essential Elements for Strings, book 1 (for their particular instrument) -
must be 2000 edition or later
*2. Folding music stand to keep at home, for practicing
*3. Soft facecloth-sized untreated cloth for wiping off fingerprints and rosin;
Flannel or tee shirt cloth is perfect!
*4. A foam shoulder rest for violins and violas (They don't need the fancy kind)
*5. An endpin strap for cellos (hooks onto the leg of your chair)
*6. A cloth tote bag to keep all string supplies together.
*7. A pencil with an eraser
(I will provide a music folder.)
PLEASE NOTE:
There is an option to buy a tuner for the strings. This is NOT necessary for our beginning string players. 🙂
Below are the links to three very reputable string rental companies: Music and Arts, Johnson Strings, and David French Music.
(For Johnson Strings, look under "Northborough-Southborough- Neary" and then you can choose Woodward from there.)
We hope to have our instruments ready, so that we can start string classes the week of 9/9.
In addition to the instrument, please take note of the accessories and supplies needed, which are listed above and on each music rental page.
Please follow the instructions below on how to determine the correct size instrument for your child.
As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Email is the best way.
