Jewish American Heritage Month
Jewish American Heritage Month, observed each May, honors the rich history, culture, and lasting contributions of Jewish Americans to the fabric of the United States. Established by a presidential proclamation in 2006 by President George W. Bush, this national observance has become an annual opportunity to reflect on the achievements and influence of Jewish Americans in fields ranging from science and the arts to public service and social justice. Throughout the month, communities across the country host exhibits, educational programs, and cultural events that celebrate Jewish heritage and deepen understanding of the diverse experiences that have shaped American life.

Food Allergy Awareness Week, May 11th-17th
A food allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a certain food as harmful and reacts by causing allergic symptoms. Foods that cause allergic reactions are allergens.
About 20 million people in the U.S. have food allergies (16 million adults and 4 million children). We commonly hear about children with food allergies. But people can develop a food allergy at any age. Many adults develop food allergies even without a prior history of allergies.
There is no cure for food allergies. The only way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the food you are allergic to. The good news is that with the right steps, you can manage your food allergies and live a full life.
Find food allergy awareness information and social media tools on our Kids with Food Allergies website.

Creating a Culture of Belonging
This week in enrichment, our second-grade students read A Little Respectful Spot by Diane Alber. Following the story, students participated in an activity where they were given different scenarios and asked to decide whether the characters were showing respect. They shared ideas on how to respond respectfully in those situations and reflected on how the characters might feel when treated with respect. The discussion then expanded to include ways we can show respect for our belongings, places in the community, and other people. Students wrapped up the lesson by completing a “Showing Respect” activity to highlight what they had learned. Ask your child how they show respect during their day, and whether they have any new ideas after this week’s lesson!
